Here is how to ensure your team understands the goal of a project…
or you risk the outcome having no impact! Follow these steps:
1. Have people on the team who in-depth understand your business, strategy, customers, market, stakeholder needs, and the company’s technical capabilities.
There is no need for one person to understand all of that—you need a cross-functional team.
2. Ensure that your team has clarity about which customer segment they want to target and what problem they want to solve.
Go deep—most teams are unable to provide this information.
3. Demand clarity about the benefit of this project for the business and its alignment with the company’s strategic goals.
Teams normally don’t have a problem delivering this information.
4. Understand which KPIs the team will use to measure the delivered value for your customer as well as for your business.
Be aware—don’t allow KPIs to measure pure functionality—you are after value!
5. Ask the team to capture all findings in an easily understandable form. If you have multiple teams, use the same form for all of them.
This will be the first step to ensuring quality information when deciding about product development projects.
So, if you want clarity about your projects…
you need to ask for a minimum set of quality information…
and give your teams time to gather it for you.
